#BehindTheLyrics – “Free Man’s Road” Verse 1

Free Man’s Road

I’m travelling down a road once travelled before.  Am I becoming less ,or am I becoming more. Once is not enough, twice may be too much.  Are answers just opinions in yourself you must trust.

Summer 2016, the weather is hot and humid, I’m hungover, I have no map, and I am wandering the streets of Belgrade,Serbia in search of a nice hole in the wall to drink a beer and pass the time. I am coming down from 4-day bender in Amsterdam, NL paired with an unexpected overnighter in the Belgrade airport, so the mind is in an interesting spot to say the least.  The old communist buildings and graffiti on the city walls remind me so much of Bucharest, Romania, but the language is quite different; The look is familiar, but the sound is new and exciting to me.

I continue walking in my daze before I question where I am. I stop and think to myself “I’m travelling down a road once travelled before.” When I said this line, I knew I was onto something, so I stopped in my tracks, leaned against the lightpost which seemed to be perfectly placed for me to have this inspiration, and began to write the song “Free Man’s Road.”

I was walking in circles

I had been wandering aimlessly for about twenty minutes until I recognized some familiar landmarks, which brought me to realize I was walking in circles, or as I put it, down a road once travelled before.

Am I becoming less, or am I becoming more? I had a strong sense of feeling I was growing mentally even though I was physically exhausted. I was driven by desire and curiosity of what a beer on this hot Serbian day would taste like.  It also seems I was searching for much more than that, something much deeper than just a new tickle to my taste buds place and a place to share some jokes with a local bartender. I was on a mission.

Moments that seemed to resonate like a one song playlist on shuffle?

Once is not enough, and twice may be too much.  Have you ever visited ideas or hopes that never worked out more than just once in your mind?  Moments that seemed to resonate like a one song playlist on shuffle? Depending on the rhythm you are walking to, this repeating playlist could be your saving grace, or your biggest challenge.

Any idea or concept can be viewed from different angles and therefore must be re-visited and re-explored. Are answers just opinions? In yourself you must trust. Talk to yourself, be your own voice of reason.  Is it possible to swallow another person’s opinion and turn it into your reality? Maybe, but there is only one person in the world who knows what is best for you. You guessed it. That person is you, and no one else.  Except for your mother. She always knows what’s best. Trust me.
